Book Review – Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman

ACS_0011Eleanor Oliphant was everywhere in 2018. And as usual I was miles behind everyone. However, walking in to the library and seeing this book just sitting in the Your-Next-Read section. Twas, fate.

Now, I have heard only good things about this book so I was quite surprised when I found the start a little on the slow side. But perhaps that is the beauty – and wider point – of the novel. Eleanor is a little hard to get along with when you don’t really know her. She can be overly blunt and shuns the society norms, but as we get to know Eleanor as the novel progresses she opens up as a vulnerable, flawed but beautiful person.

Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is a rare character that occurs only occasionally in fiction. Unique and yet the Everyman, with heart-wrenching story but a strong rise from the ashes. Eleanor may be unconventional, but hasn’t everyone wanted to be a little Eleanor sometimes.
